Compare the same task and the same result
A short first draft does not prove that a workflow saves time. Setup, source checking, and corrections also take time. Use the fictional order export for all methods, preserve identifiers, remove the known exact repeat, and produce the same checked weekly summary. Otherwise the comparison measures different tasks.
Work with the example
Common source dataset ↓Blank measurement log ↓Reference result ↓All records are fictional. Import CSV identifier columns as Text. Quoted CSV fields do not define spreadsheet column types.
The measurement log is intentionally blank. This page provides a comparison procedure and a reference answer, not invented speed measurements or a ranking of AI products.
Choose a method that fits the work
| Method | Good use in this example | Work you must still verify |
|---|---|---|
| Excel built-in tools / Power Query | Typed import, visible transformations, repeatable refresh | Source file, row grain, locale, removal rules, and summary conditions. |
| Local browser tools | Quick inspection, exact snapshot comparison, date-review reports | Tool limits, unresolved groups, and the meaning of differences. |
| AI-assisted formulas or instructions | Draft a transformation plan or formula from a fictional example | Every proposed step, function availability, input handling, and final totals. |
The local tools on this site support inspection and review. They do not build the entire sales report. Include any extra spreadsheet work needed to finish the task when recording their total time. AI can propose a formula, but the spreadsheet should calculate and retain the final report.
Measure setup, work, and review separately
Define a start condition: the same original file is available and no method-specific cleanup has been performed. Start a timer for setup, then record active work time and review/correction time separately. Stop only when the output has the expected record eligibility, amounts, and preserved identifiers. Record a failed attempt as failed rather than assigning it an artificially fast completion time.
Verify RM267.60 net sales, 26 units, nine eligible lines, and eight orders. Check the source boundary dates and the repeated line. If you already know one method well, record that experience because practice affects the comparison. Repeat the exercise on the second sample to observe how much setup can be reused.
Keep the simplest method that remains maintainable
For one quick inspection, a browser tool may be enough. For recurring imports, a maintained query can make the steps easier to repeat. For an unfamiliar formula, an assistant may help produce a candidate, while a small known-answer test reveals whether it meets the specification.
Choose using your observed completion quality, review burden, and repeatability. Keep the measurement log with the sample files. Do not generalize a result from one small fictional export to every spreadsheet, company, or AI model.
